Space Traveler Shares Emotional Distress After Wave of Backlash Post-Spaceflight

A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her struggle with mental health after being subjected to a relentless barrage of criticism in the wake of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.

Amanda Nguyen – celebrated as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space in the spring, which also carried well-known figures.

The high-profile flight was met with derision by some, who challenged its value and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who became the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction buried her dreams under an landslide of gendered hatred.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” the astronaut shared in a public message, referring to a phone call from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the journey.

She described the press attention and digital reaction as an barrage beyond typical human coping.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she revealed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

The researcher, who has dedicated her work to female health science and performed experiments during the flight, said everything she had worked for – from her lab work and years of training to the personal milestone of her heritage – was overshadowed under the deluge of sexist vitriol.

She is best known for her tireless campaigning protecting the rights of survivors of assault.

Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was put on hold after surviving a rape during her time as a student, leading to a long campaign for accountability.

A Path to Recovery

Months following reaching space, she noted the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she thanked the followers whose kindness pulled her through. “Your support rescued me,” she said.

She noted that even with the backlash, significant positive outcomes had emerged from the experience, such as spotlight on her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.

Flight Details

The fully automated New Shepard rocket lifted off from Texas in April, carrying the all-female team on a short trip that passed the internationally recognized boundary of space.

The team of pioneers also featured accomplished professionals from multiple disciplines.
